At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
