Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
